5 Tips To Protect Your Tile And Grout

May 19, 2021 | Uncategorized

There are so many reasons to love tile floors.  They are durable, a cool touch of style, and they can even help keep your home cool during hot summer months.

As the leader for tile cleaning in Clinton Township, MI one of the most common questions we are asked is how to best clean tile between our visits.

Here are a few tips and tricks that can help your tile last even longer when paired with professional tile cleaning on a routine basis.

#1 – Protect tile using rugs and doormats.

In the high traffic areas of your home such as doorways, hallways, or in front of sinks try placing rugs.  Rugs can catch dirt and other particles that are often tracked indoors that can scratch and wear down your tile.

#2 – Take added measures if there are pets in the home.

Try to avoid scratching on tile floors by keeping your pet’s nails trimmed.  Vacuum up hair and dander at least weekly, and if your pet happens to have an accident, clean it up fast.  Pet urine contains acid that can eat away at your tile surfaces, so it is important to act quickly.

#3 – Be cautious with furniture on tile.

By placing protective pads of the feet of furniture you can help avoid scratching.  Try not to put items that are extremely heavy directly on tile to avoid cracking it.

#4 – Sweep and mop your tile often.

Dust and particles can dull the surface of tile.  In order to avoid this, sweep or vacuum your tile at least once a week.  When mopping, you will want to use a non-abrasive cloth or mop.  For a homemade cleaning solution you can try a mixture of  ¼ cup white vinegar in 2 gallons of hot water.  If you choose to use a store bought cleanser, try and avoid any abrasive or oil based cleaners as well as ammonia or bleach.

#5 – Reseal your tile and grout regularly.

Over time the seal on your tile and grout will gradually wear away.  It is important to restore it in order to prevent stains, dirt, and liquid from seeping into your tile and grout.  Chem-Dry can reseal your tile and grout as a part of our professional tile cleaning service in Clinton Township, MI.
